East Windsor Public Schools Building Project

The Town of East Windsor and East Windsor Public Schools are using this site to regularly provide the community with updates on plans for upgrading our public schools.
Town and school leaders have collaborated in recent years to develop a forward-thinking plan to improve the educational environment for our students. During the 2023–2024 school year, East Windsor Public Schools partnered with Town leadership to apply for Connecticut state heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) grants in the wake of COVID. This effort came shortly after the district was forced to close schools on multiple days in early fall 2024 because classroom temperatures exceeded 90 degrees.
As part of the grant application process, the district was required to complete a feasibility study. However, midway through the study, the construction consulting group paused the process and advised that EWPS would not qualify for the HVAC grants due to significant building-envelope deficiencies across all three schools—including issues with roofs, walls, windows, floors, and ceilings.
The consultants further provided professional guidance that these conditions required immediate attention and that continuing with temporary repairs was no longer a viable approach for facilities that are 60–70 years old. They explained that such short-term fixes would only become more expensive over time while still leaving major underlying issues unresolved.
This information was shared publicly during a meeting in February 2024, where the community was urged to seriously explore the development of new and/or renovated school facilities to meet East Windsor’s future needs.
A new Ad Hoc Committee on School Renovation Planning was created in 2025 to identify comprehensive, actionable plans to address the facility needs of our three schools. The committee includes EWPS administrators and board members, Town officials, community members, and parents/guardians.
The committee settled on two primary project options in fall 2025: Renovate-to-new at the elementary school, and construction of a new combined campus for middle and high school students at the existing EWHS campus.
The Board of Education believes the combined middle and high school project is the higher priority of the two projects. Current and projected enrollment show a need to “right size” the district by transitioning to two campuses to create efficiencies.
